To She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named on Your 30th Birthday

20 Oct

Dear She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named,

Today is your 30th birthday.  I won’t tell everyone who this letter is for, since everyone believes that you are turning 28 and I don’t want to give away your secret (Plus, if you are turning 28, that means I am only 32, so your secret is safe with me.).

I just want to enlighten you on turning 30, since I am braving this unknown territory ahead of you.  There are a few things I have discovered since turning 30 that might make this transition a little easier for you.

1. In your 30’s, you will finally figure out “who you are.”  Isn’t this the elusive goal that we are always searching for?  Well, when you become a woman in your 30’s, you will finally know.  You will become comfortable with yourself and what you stand for and what you believe and what you are doing.

2.  In your 30’s, you will stop being scared.  You will gain courage as you move into your 30’s.  You will gain boldness to speak your mind and stand up for yourself. You will have to learn to watch your words so you don’t hurt the feelings of the girls in their 20″s.

3.  In your 30’s, you will stop caring about others’ opinion of you.  You won’t spend time worrying about what other people might be saying or thinking about you.  You will spend your time and energy taking care of your family, and you won’t mind (most of the time) that it will take all of your time and energy to do that.

4.  In your 30’s, you will learn how to take care of yourself. You will really come into your body and your beauty, and you will care about what you put into and onto your body. You will learn to love yourself.

And the best, most important thing I want to tell you:

5.  In your 30’s, you will understand that you are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, and you will grasp the fact that He loves you despite your faults.  This is a deep, beautiful understanding that some women never quite get, but I know that you will.

Now that you are 30, you will stop worrying about little things that don’t matter, and let me tell you, it is a liberating experience.

I pray for you that you will make the best of it, that you will realize God at work around you and join Him in His work.  I pray that you will be a woman who is courageous and dangerous, because that is what this world needs.

And I love you, girl.

A Little Birthday Excitement

8 Sep

Last weekend while we were at the beach, we celebrated Jason’s birthday.  He is a young 37 now, even though I keep teasing him and calling him 40!

Birthdays just get less and less exciting the older that you get, but one really great thing about having kids is that THEY get so excited about ALL birthdays! I don’t know if it’s because they get cake or get to see something on fire or what, but it adds a new level of excitement to an otherwise boring birthday.

They were so excited about signing Jason’s birthday card, then later that night they were so excited about Jason’s birthday cake.  I could barely get the cake to him and I don’t think he actually got to blow out any of the candles!

It is such a joy to experience life with children!

They could hardly wait to sing happy birthday!

Jason is a wonderful husband and father, and he just keeps getting better and better the older he gets.  I know that this will be a great year for him!

Charlie’s 4th Birthday Party!!!

2 Jun

Am I the only one who just cannot believe that Charlie is 4?  His birthday was a couple of weeks ago, but yesterday we finally got around to celebrating with a superhero party!  We had such a great time with our family and our friends.  We are so blessed to be surrounded by people who love us!  When I woke up yesterday morning and started stressing about the party, I just asked Jesus to help make this a special time for Charlie, for everyone to come and just celebrate his little life, and that’s what happened!

The party was themed around Charlie’s latest obsession: superheroes!

Batman and Superman on their favorite form of transportation! The Batmobile!

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Supermaddie! Maddie was really upset when I had to explain to her that she couldn't literally fly.

Maddie’s 2nd Birthday Part(y) 3!!!

8 Feb

Ok, I know that this is getting ridiculous!  A 2-year old having 3 birthday parties?  It sounds ludicrous to me, also, but it just had to be done.  I had to have a party for her friends, a party for our family, and a little something on her actual birthday.  It wasn’t much, don’t worry.

She got to wear her fabulous birthday outfit to church, and was so precious even though her birthday onesie did have marker stains all over the front of it.  (I know I wouldn’t be able to get that out.)  You can see my earlier post for shopping details on her outfit if you’re interested.

We came home from church and gave her her birthday present from us: a bike!  We couldn’t decide if we wanted to get her a big-wheel or a real bike, and finally decided that since Charlie has a bike she is always trying to ride, it would just make sense to go ahead and go for it.  Don’t worry-we did get a helmet for that big head of hers, too!

Trying out the new bike! She hasn't quite figured out how to pedal yet, but she will soon.

Then, after Maddie’s favorite meal of chicken nuggets and mac-n-cheese, Maddie got to blow out the candles!

Maddie was well-practiced at blowing out candles by this point, so she got them on the first try!

So now, for a few months at least, I have a 2-year old and a 3-year old.  People always get very wide-eyed and look at me like I am a little crazy when I tell them the ages of my children!  Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and I have a similar look on my face……..
